Photography

Through still image documentation, TK aims to capture mushing in its complexity to provide a more accurate portrayal and challenge two stereotypical and one-sided images of the sport: the purely exotic-romantic perspective versus the one that condemns it all as simply animal torture.

The stills are from the 2018 and 2019 Femundløpet, the 2018 Finnmarksløpet in Norway, and the 2019 Iditarod races in Alaska.

Keywords that define TK’s approach in photography:

DETAILS

Beauty can be found in details. They help understand the whole process, foster connection, and enhance the visual experience, making it richer and more colorful.

ATMOSPHERE

Capturing the atmosphere of the various stages of a race is not only visually appealing but also helps the audience to be present in that very moment.

PORTRAITS

Intrepidity, fatigue, and joy are evident on the faces and in the movements, something we can relate to or want to relate to. They provide viewers with mushers and teams to root for.

GESTURES

Discovering and capturing gestures between team members reveals the relationships within the team, which are essential for understanding this bond-based, symbiosis-like lifestyle.

HUMOR

Why not add a bit of humor to it now and then? It hasn’t really found its place in the mushing- related social media yet but could be a new aspect to explore.

RACE VETERINARIANS

Keeping a focus on the work of the race vets, too, the way they interact with the dogs and the mushers reveals their care and dedication.

…and always in search of discovering new perspectives, angles, and topics within.
